perletwo: Gim & Yera, the happy couple (legion - allons)

OK, so the work on this primer kind of got away from me, mea culpa. But I now have it complete up to the current "The Culling" crossover arc.

In Part 1, we saw how Yera was duped into impersonating Shrinking Violet for months on end, during which time "Vi" secretly married Colossal Boy. Yera was exposed, Vi was rescued, Gim and Yera decided to stay married, and all was on track for them all to live happily ever after.

But first, they gotta tell Gim's parents...

3 pages from a 9-page backup story.

Marte charges that the marriage may make waves for her politically as Earthgov president. Yera gives a demonstration of how her powers "make people uncomfortable," and she and Marte fence about the unpopularity of Durlans, especially in light of their lethal inhospitality to anyone who lands on Durlan soil. (See this post for a look at how Chameleon Boy and R.J. Brande were greeted on a return trip.) Yera more than holds her own in the discussion.

The story closes with Marte and Wynn chatting in bed after the kids have gone home. The pendant really did the trick, Wynn tells her; she thought it would when she picked it out, "last month, after the Science Police told me about their secret wedding." Perks of being president. "Now I wonder if I can find a way to convince them to bring their kids up Jewish?" Marte muses on the fadeout.

Gim and Yera next make a cameo appearance in an issue where a mad bomber is on the loose - and he's found a way to sabotage the Science Police's protocols for tracking down bomb threats.

Two other items of note from this issue: We learn that Colossal Boy and SP Officer GiGi Cusimano (Legion liaison Shvaughn Erin's roommate, who's dating Sun Boy) are old friends; and Shrinking Violet is cleared to leave Medicus One and resume normal life.

GiGi and Gim get cozy in a Tales of the Legion backup story, "Triangle" (2 of 8 pages).

Sun Boy is horrified to see them hugging, and tackles Gim about it at HQ; he laughs it off. So Sun Boy tackles GiGi, who blows him off with a resounding DUMP.

Our happy couple next makex a cameo in the first issue of the Baxter Paper series, which kicks off the Eye For An Eye arc.

And the fact that the real, newly hardcore-gritty-angry Shrinking Violet is moving back into HQ has nothing to do with it, I'm sure.

Ahhh, election season. Always a circus, and never more so than when Khund assassins are attacking the computer-nominated candidates. The Legionnaires are on protection detail in baxter paper #10 and beat back all Khundian comers, right up to election eve...

The Khundian's sonic weapon knocks out everyone except Gim, who takes him out before he can kill the outgoing president aka Mom, albeit with some difficulty. The election happens and the world keeps turning - until it's discovered the new prez is a puppet for Universo, but that's another long, long story. And that's it for Yera in the 1980s run of the Legion.

She next appears in the 2008 Legion arc in Action Comics. This follows immediately after the Lightning Saga in that year's JLA/JSA titles. Back in the 30th Century, much has changed. An artifact has been discovered that seems to prove Superman's alien origins were a hoax, and this has been used to whip up Earth's chronic xenophobia. The Legion of Super-Rejects has been rechristened the Justice League of Earth and given Earthgov sanction. Most of the Legion's alien membership has been hunted down and imprisoned - and Earth's sun has mysteriously turned red.

The remaining Legionnaires, hiding underground, have brought Superman back to restore his legacy. But with the sun red, he's not much use in a fight. Could this be a job for stealth instead of brawn? Ask the potted plant in JLE HQ - or one of the schoolchildren on a field trip there....

....well, no.

We pick up the fight in the next issue.

Yeah, that disguise doesn't last long. But we've still got to get Sun Boy to give Supes that funky high from the yellow sun!

I think it's fair to term that Yera Saves the World, don't you? :D She and Gim show up in two more panels, looking quite cozy:

From this arc the Legion plunged directly into Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds. Yera appears in that arc, but only as a background player in George Perez's patented million-people-fighting scenes.

The Legion rebooted briefly in 2010 after 3 Worlds, and Yera made two appearances there.

Later in this run, a major arc had Durlan revolutionaries terrorizing the United Planets in the name of the late R.J. Brande. Yera accompanied Cham to one of Brande's strongholds to try to track down the mastermind of the terrorist plot.

This reboot was preempted by the launch of the New 52, and the LOSH title re-rebooted. Yera, however, was shuffled off to the 21st century with an away team in Legion Lost.

That's the time bubble exploding on the trip home with their prisoner in Lost #1. Gates and Yera are MIA and presumed dead by the away team.

Meanwhile, with the loss of contact with the destroyed time bubble, the rest of the Legion presumes the entire away team is dead, and installs statues for them in the Hall of Dead Heroes. How's Gim taking it?

Gates and Yera stay MIA until Lost #6, when the Losties catch up to them in a Super Secret Government Black Ops Facility.

What's J'onn doing there? I have no idea. Something to do with whatever he's getting up to in Stormwatch, I guess.

Say it with me now: ewwwwwwwwwww.

That catches us up to this post from Lost #8, which started this whole primer off. Personally I'm not seeing any support for Yera's claim that her relationship with Gim was long since done in what I've got here, but hey, new universe, and marriage is boring, amirite?

Now she's in The Culling, and it's been revealed she's working for something called Echo, and her target seems to be Harvest, the Big Bad of the Culling arc. What Echo is and what it all means, we don't know yet. But we do know one thing: White is really not her color.
